Freshly squeezed
These Florida shows were close enough to each other that it was easy enough for Floridians to catch all three. It was a brief tour, just four dates

in FLA and Atlanta. This show has the return of electric Deep Elem and electric To Lay Me Down. The tapes used to be hard to find. First Set. Though it's kind of sloppy, Jack Straw is also kind of good. [The first 6secs on the OFF are from 10/27/79]. Little Red Rooster sneaks up on you, unfortunately Bobby is turned down in places on the SBD, so use miller_90013. The next couple are average versions, albeit not the tightest. Deep Elem is the only electric one of '80, after playing acoustic versions 6 times in the 3sF80 shows. After this it would remain rare. We know they played it electric in '66 but we don't know how much. It returned in '70 – first acoustic then electric, in a more blues-based arrangement in the key of A, then it disappeared until this arrangement in E. It's a superb breakout (and has the redheads verse). [The first several secs on the OFF are from 3/9/81]. Looks Like Rain gets bigger than you might expect. After a certain point Jer just starts playing it. Deal is an absolute scream. Second Set. Stranger is so, so good. It's the only one followed by To Lay Me Down. The latter is the first electric version since the '74 farewell shows. The tempo is up and down, but it's game and would soon get better. [The 1st 6 secs on the OFF are from 12/13/80]. This is a weird position for Let it Grow but it's otherwise standard, as is Terrapin. The OFF cuts 14secs from Drums @1:13. It's pretty dry, but Space is good, and the rest of the set is a tangy citrus, finishing up with a sweetened U.S. Blues. 1st Set: B- 2nd Set: C+ Overall = 3¼ stars Highlights: Deep Elem Blues – prepped by preceding six acoustics Deal – real scream Feel Like a Stranger – fresh OJ U.S. Blues – sweetened SOURCES: The tobin_fix-20049 is the updated, patched SBD, but this is also a good show for a MTX (the Chappell has better levels and the correct pitch). The wagner_miller_90013 is the best AUD, but runs fast, needing -1% pitch correction (some of the AUDs run faster). 30 Trips has the whole show, but with slightly edited versions of Jack Straw, Deep Elem, To Lay Me Down, and Drums. Definitive Live Story has Deep Elem.

15th Trip Around the Sun
Second of three shows from Lakeland, FL (of course there's the great 5/21/77 and the lesser-known 9/12/82). This one seems to be a relatively unknown (perhaps
...
uncirculated?) tape- not even ranking in DeadBase list of "Favorite Tapes" from 1980, while others from the hot southern '80 run - 11/26 (2), 11/29 (8), and 11/30 (5) - make the cut. Set one highlights, to my mind, are maybe too many to mention. It includes powerful renditions of Little Red Rooster, Passenger (Phil is a beast), a rad and rare (electric) version of Deep Elem Blues- appropriately also the feature song on the 30 trips definitive live story- Looks Like Rain and a short, but blistering closing Deal. I actually like the first set better than the second, even though the second is good, too. I second c-freedom, the 41- minute pre-drumz sequence is excellent, "yummy and creative." You get a raw, early Stranger opener, followed by To Lay Me Down, a rare and surprising second set Let It Grow, then a tight Terrapin. The next 41, though - 16 minutes of drums/space then 25 - is underwhelming. I like the Black Peter, though. Sure, Dylan M., it's got the "sing along factor," what with NFA, Sugar Mag, and the US Blues encore.

love that the Dead played all these places that are not 'A' list destinations. This is a great show, good 1st first. The pre-drumz is yummy and creative- Stranger, To Lay me Down> Let it Grow> Terrapin Station (the end of Terrapin is fierce!) Sound is fantastic.

Excellent show for Brent heads
No doubt that Brent is way up in the mix - I heard more from him, start to finish, than I did from Bob. And Brent sounds great - the more I listen to these

early years, the more I appreciate what solid vocal and keyboard skills he brought. Too soon gone. Tune performances are powerful if pretty straightforward. Beautiful, forceful To Lay Me Down, which sometimes sounds tentative, I think because it was played so infrequently that it was almost a break out each time. Jerry struggles with T Jed lyrics a bit - he proposes to drink all night, creating doubt about when to rock and also accuses Charlie Fog of kicking his eye, raising questions about the fate of his dog. Never look back - Jerry just rips ahead. A fine show, start to finish with excellent sound quality, again with a heavy Brent presence.

only add to the recording, as they are between songs. Recording to begin with is top notch for 1980, which generally had some mixing issues when listening back on the SBDs. Highlights include a powerful LL Rain and raging Deal set closer. Pre drums second set is also pretty varied and quality 1980 sound. Post drums is pretty type-A setlist wise, but good for sing along factor. All in all a solid runner up for the Fox Atlanta 80' show and the Long Beach show to come that December. Cool!!
